Solo.

I spent much of yesterday alone, an experience which, after the holidays and a summer and fall of near-constant activity, felt foreign to me. I did mountains of laundry, wrote for an hour or two, shopped for plants, shivered in the cold. I felt alone, but not lonely. The world seemed quiet, but not dead.

These photos by Martin Vlach capture moments like this perfectly.

  1. I really love these images. I've been thinking a lot about solitude myself and these photographs are a perfect expression of that. All that welcome emptiness.

  8. I've never been good at being alone, but these images make it look much more appealing. I could get lost in these photos.

  9. I spend too much time solo, especially living in a city where I know a decent number of people. My wishes to hang out with friends go unfulfilled. It makes me want to return to my parents' home because at least there's someone to talk to.

  10. I almost feel like I'm intruding when I look at these photos.

After a busy November and December, I almost feel like January has been one large (and welcome!) exhale.
