Aaaaaaaaah!

At twenty-eight, I've reached the uncomfortable age at which everyone around me seems to be engaged or expecting a child. Mercifully, this seem less prevalent in Williamsburg, where I live, but on Facebook - and all of social media in general - it's all diamonds and diapers, all the time.

These hand-lettered cards by Emily McDowell - when read in the somewhat startled tone I imagine in my head - are just perfect. Appropriately happy, appropriately horrified.

  3. Growing up in the Midwest, I feel like I went through that early. All my friends were getting married and having babies before 20! These would have come in handy. hahaha. :)

  8. "Diamonds and diapers, all the time." I know how you feel. Thankfully NYC is a bit of a bubble from those sort of things. These cards are perfect. I'm going to have to stock up for my friends back down South.

  9. These cards are just perfect. So much more appropriate than the expletives that have at various times escaped from my mouth upon learning of a new birth or engagement.

  10. Part of this is where you live, as in the US, even among women with college degrees, it's common to get married and have children before age thirty. In other parts of the world, particularly in parts of Europe, most women with college degrees or higher start marrying and having kids in their early thirties or even later. Where I live almost all of the educated young women I know were married after age thirty and had their kids around ages 32-36. That's not optimal in some ways, but there's definitely less pressure to get married in your twenties in my culture (or in Italy, where my husband is from). In my twenties I was still globe trotting and there was plenty of time for marriage and family! Enjoy your unique path, while sharing the joy of your friends in their special news. :)

  11. I agree with the comment from Stephen above. Most of my friends from childhood started getting married and having kids in their mid to late 20s. Which blows my mind a little. It's not only the US. You see this in asia too... but the US is quite traditional in this regard.
