Gourmet Gatsby.

A confession: I've never been a fan of The Great Gatsby, having read it twice - once as a junior in high school, and again as a writing major in college. Because of this, I hadn't been paying much attention to the hype surrounding this month's movie adaptation - but, I'm realizing now, perhaps I should have been. I might have gotten word about this spectacular, edible tribute - a limited-edition collection of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams - in time to try it. (It's sold out, unfortunately, but the idea, I figured, was still worth sharing.)

The collection features four flavors that transport tasters "from Zelda [Fitzgerald's] childhood home in Alabama, to New York, St. Paul, Paris, and on through the Roaring Twenties." There's cognac with Seville orange marmalade; dark chocolate with whiskey and caraway; sweet cream with blackberries; and homemade biscuits laced with peach jam (created with a nod to the Loveless Cafe in Nashville). Brilliant.

Also, unrelated to Gatsby but just as intriguing (and still in stock!): a flavor that Jeni's describes as "the ice cream version of cheesecake," made from small-batch farmstead cheese and Snowville cream. Sold.

Find this and much more - including flavors like juniper and lemon curd; Savannah buttermilk; and chamomile - at Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, here

  1. YUM! Every single one of those flavors sounds amazing, but I've got a soft spot in my heart for Loveless biscuits and peach jam (I wish I had a hot biscuit right now).

  7. I'm so glad I'm not the only one!! I read it in high school and didn't really like it either. The only reason I'm halfway paying attention is because B wants to go to it. Otherwise, I would only rent it.

But I can get on board for anything that involves ice cream! :)

  9. I've never read The Great Gatsby. Shame! It's on my list of things to read before the movie comes out...

  10. Normally I would scoff at $12 pints of ice cream - but these flavors look unbelievable and I totally looked up which market nearby carries them... might have to splurge on a pint (or two).

  11. Ah, so interesting your disdain for Gatsby. I hated it the first time and loved it the second -- I was so emotional! And I found the same emotional feelings at the end of the movie. Such pain when you lay out your entire life for the one you love and the reciprocations are out of your control. So real.

Also interesting in that I really hate ice cream but I will go out of my way to be in a Jeni’s store (and just order a waffle cone) because it reminds me of home (Columbus). Thanks for sharing Ohio’s best with the world Shoko!

  12. I, ummm, need this. Now please. It would be perfect to enjoy during the movie... Never mind the logistics of sneaking ice cream into a movie.

  14. Was just in San Fran a few weeks ago and walked past the Splendid stand--I cannot explain to you how glorious THE SMELL! OMG! Amazing. What heaven should/must smell like:)

Also--gorgeous photos of the peanut butter brownies over on Cup of Jo! Stunning, lady!

  15. Hannah, I think that's a wonderful idea...just eat fast!

Joey, I had no idea there were Jeni's stands! When will one be in NY, I wonder? Also, yes, the peanut butter brownies are a knockout - I can't take credit for the photos (they're Averie's) but I highly recommend trying them! :)

  16. Mmm...

It's funny, I've read Gatsby twice too, once in high school and the second time last year, and I loved it both times; my boyfriend, on the other hand, has tried reading it multiple times, and he's never been able to get past the first 20 or so pages, even though in my mind, that book would be right up his alley. But regardless of how people feel about this book, almost everyone I've talked to has strong feelings of some sort.

And I'm stoked to see the movie, but still haven't had the chance!

  17. Funny thing you feature these! There's a jeni's coming to my neighborhood and my friends have been ALL ABOUT IT but I've never heard of the brand. Clearly, it's amazing. You got me so excited. These look to die for!
