Sweet Thing: Toby's Estate.

Anyone who works from home will tell you how important it is to have a place like Toby's. I've parked at one of those little round tables for the better part of many an afternoon - finishing work, paging through a book, soaking in the light from its gigantic front windows (a coffee shop so bright is a rarity).

But if we're being honest, the real draw for me is the food. Most days, I order the avocado toast (drizzled with tahini and flecked with sea salt), or the yogurt if I'm feeling especially virtuous. Every now and then, though - try as I might to resist - I succumb to this.

Baked at Roberta's, one of my favorite restaurants from my old neighborhood, this sturdy little curlicue of a sticky bun may be gone in three bites, but it packs an exquisitely buttery wallop. Words can't describe how much I look forward to having one on certain slow-moving, cloud-cast days - so I'll let those sublime, glossy drips down the side speak for themselves.

  1. oh gosh, places like this are so important. Working at home all day can make me so restless!

The liveliness and light at Toby's is probably perfect for that coffee shop clarity that comes form the hustle and bustle (... and being a little over caffeinated.)

  3. The glistening icing on that pastry is almost too much to handle. Looks delicious, and what a cozy place to enjoy it in!

  4. That looks like my kind of place. I tend to use the library as my office, but it doesn't hold the appeal of coffee shops/bakeries.

  5. Oh my! That place looks awesome! It's either someplace I would get a ton of work done or would get too distracted by people watching :) And that sticky bun....wow...looks like the perfect afternoon pick-me-up. Enjoy!

  6. What a clean and well-lighted place :) I think it goes without saying that that sticky bun is making my heart flip, but that avocado toast with tahini sounds amazing as well!

  8. We have Toby's Estate here in Sydney too. I wonder if it's the same brand? Love their coffee.

  10. I'm so jealous! While we have lots of cosy, intimate cafes here, I've never found anything light bright and inspirational like this. However, I am moving to Brisbane in about a month, so I think my chances might increase up there!

  11. I adore Toby's! Do you live in Williamsburg? I used to live one stop over on the L, right at 1st ave & 14th street.
