Ups/Downs.

Photographer Paul Batt is the eye behind these thoughtful - and thought-provoking - portraits of shoppers on escalators. As someone who's always found the experiencing of riding an escalator somewhat awkward - what do I do? where do I look? - I love the discomfort, and the mystery, and the curious sadness of the moments he's captured. Says Batt, "I tried to show longingness and the need for connection, as strangers randomly pass one another in opposing directions."

  3. Down escalators terrify me a tiny bit. I'm always afraid I'm going to miss the step and fall face first, thereby being eaten alive by the escalator. It's irrational and silly, I know, but I've been afraid since I was a kid. I'll go down, but I cling for dear life.

  5. I feel the same way about escalator riding, which is why I often treat them like stairs. I find going up escalators especially awkward in DC as most of them are very steep, and I often find my face just inches from another person's butt...

  8. I'm so that person who takes forever to get on the escalator (like a couple steps have to pass by before I find the right one). The ones in DC's metro scare the crap out of me. Even though I use to live there and use them everyday I was convinced I would fall off the super tall one near Georgetown.

  9. I spent the day at the aquarium with a friend's baby two weekends ago, and all the little guy wanted to do was ride the escalator. Hippos? Meh. Sharks? Yawn. Escalator?? Again again again! xo
