This week on the Equals Record: learning to dance, learning to let go.

A snippet from the new post: "We sat in a circle on the first day of ballet class, thirty-or-so adults on the floor. Our teacher was a lovely woman with the sort of soothing presence you’d hope for in an introductory-level dance class meant for grown-ups, and she’d asked each of us to share three things with the group: our name, our level of dance experience, and whether we had any injuries to report. ‘My name is Shoko,’ I said when it was my turn. ‘I was probably in kindergarten the last time I took a dance class. And my body feels fine.’ Next to me sat a man who must have been in his mid-sixties. He had an angular face, a friendly smile, hair that glinted silver. He introduced himself, telling us he was the proud father of two dancers, now grown. ‘Any aches and pains?’ the teacher asked. The man smiled. ‘I’ve lived a colorful life.’"

  1. Hooray for ballet class! I'm self-conscious in those "do whatever comes naturally" movement settings too, but that's why ballet is great...100% of your concentration is spent on doing what they tell you to do!

  6. How fun! I'm glad you are pushing yourself out of your comfort zone with ballet. I think I would struggle with the "freestyle" part of moving how you feel. It sounds like a great experience though. Please keep us updated (and if there is a recital at the end! :) ).

  8. I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying your ballet classes, Shoko! And it will feel more natural, soon! I agree with Julie--I'm so bad with any kind of freestyle dance, so I love the structure ballet provides.

...and I love the quote from Rumi! I already saved it for future reference. :)

  12. I've been thinking about doing a dance class lately. Like, a modern style one that's a lot about free movement. Not sure if that's even a thing, or available, or in vogue past 1993, but if it is, I want IN. Otherwise, I'll just have to ribbon dance in my living room, as I've been doing. But, like actually.

Thanks for sharing your experience. This was such a pleasant read. Don't you love when teachers ask "aches or pains?" - it always puts me at ease, as if they are actually saying "I understand you're dealing with more than just physique".
