Happy February.

Three things I'm looking forward to this month: starting ballet class (my friend, Jamie, and I signed up for a six-week workshop and I'm beside myself with excitement),

embarking on more outer-borough dining adventures such as this one,

and getting one month closer to becoming an aunt for the second time. (My brother and sister-in-law, Margaux, are expecting a baby boy in March.) Speaking of which, we have a question for you...

...though the baby's arrival date is just weeks away, he's still without a name. While we've all thought of dozens of girls names we love, the perfect boy's name has proven much harder to come by. What are some of your favorites? They need help, and the clock's ticking...

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

  2. Ballet! That sounds amazing.
February is here and it doesn't seem possible. Before we know it it will be spring and then summer again.

As for the new addition to your family...yay! I've seen a few photos your brother posted on Instagram and I know the excitement so well. In fact, big news today is that Lucia is going to be a big sister to...a baby brother! :) Being an aunt is such a wonderful experience...you will love it. It is so amazing to see your sibling as a parent. Like your brother and SIL we had our girl name picked out and were convinced we were having another one. Boys names are much more difficult. I love girl names that are strong but also have special meaning and that are very feminine. Lucia was a no-brainer bc if she were a boy her name would have been Luca. The name means light and I love how musical it is for a girl and how strong it is as a boy's name. Luca is still our number one choice but to have a Luca and a Lucia would be crazytown.

  3. I'm jealous! I took ballet a couple of years ago and loved it. I'll use any excuse to wear legwarmers though. Congrats to Max and Margaux! Boy names are tough. Jonah and I like the name Harrison.

  4. Husband and I like "Fin", and also "Shepherd." Babies!! So exciting!!

  5. I just had a baby myself and she turned out to be a girl, but if she was a boy we were going to call her Gus (Augustus or August). I also really like Leland, Jude, Eli, Leo, Thomas, Roman, and Felix.

  6. Milo, Henry, Toby, Thomas. It's a game among my friends and I to name babies by last name. Agree with "Jude" above - you could sing the Beatles as a lullaby. :)

  7. I'm going to be an aunt in a few months too. Congrats, there's nothing like it! They have yet to settle on a name, but they know it's a boy. They're thinking Noah or William.
Is it nuts that my husband and I already have names picked out for when we have kiddos? We're thinking of Lincoln, Avery and Jack. :) Awesome about the ballet too!

  8. Awww congrtaulations! We are expecting our baby girl any day. Ironically, we found boys names so easy but are having a hard time finding a girl's name. For boys we liked Robin or Frederick. Any good girl names gratefully appreciated!

  9. I'm biased but I still love my 5 year old's name, Luca. I haven't come across many which is nice too. I also like Levi, Otis,Noah and Oscar to name a few. Hope they find something they like!

  10. Your ballet classes are sure to be a lot of fun. Congratulations on the new nephew on his way. So exciting. The boy's name I wanted to have if I'd ever been blessed with one, is Emmet. But now there is a character in The Twilight Series named that, so I would probably change my mind. Like before the show 'Dexter' came along, I loved Dexter, but as much as I like the show, I'd think twice about naming a child that. So I guess I've not been overly helpful on the naming front!

  11. you know, it's funny. for my first, we picked out a favorite boy's name and when we found out we were having a girl, we kept the name.
for my second, we didn't find out the sex first and we had a girl's name totally locked in. but for the boy...we couldn't agree. my man wanted dashiel. i wanted oliver. when i gave birth, we still hadn't decided and when he was born and they announced 'it's a boy!' i held him for the first time, i looked at him, looked up at my man and said 'he doesn't look like an oliver at all. he looks like a dash.'
    finn micaela and
    dashiel oliver.

and even stranger? i can't remember any other names that were on our list. their names seem to fit them so perfectly.

congratulations to all of your family...what an exciting time!

  12. Congrats on taking up ballet! It's a major love in my life, and I hope it's the same for you :)

And congrats to your family on the upcoming addition, that's really exciting. I love the name Eamon (my husband and I are both half-Irish).

  13. jelly of your ballet classes!! i miss that. it'll be so much fun and can't wait to hear more about it!

  14. Oh fun! Ballet class!

I love the way Margaux's name is spelled! Hmmm boys names I love: Calvin, Oscar, Owen, Eames (or Eamon, I just saw somebody commented that!)

So exciting! I love hearing baby names. Tell us what they choose!

  15. Congrats on becoming an aunt again! I like Winston as a baby boy name!

  16. Gosh, the comments contain so many beautiful names! I love Dash and Finn (but I'm partial because my nephews name is Finn). My other nephew's name is Frey (pronounce like "The Fray" but wayyy cooler). I love it because it fits him just so. My other favorites are Jude and Henry but they were mentioned already. Luca is beautiful as well.

PS: Now that I know Max is your brother, my mind is blown... no wonder you are biased :)

    Have a great weekend dear!

  17. Ballet sounds like fun!

A friend of mine just had a baby boy named Greyson Lawrence. I also know a Tyler James and an Isaac James. I like Oliver for a boy.

  18. Sweet pics.

How about Garrett or Reed or Baxter or Isaac or Bartholomew?

I had two girls so I have a bit of boy's name envy.....;)

  19. Can't wait to hear about your experience at ballet, it intimidates me!

For baby names, I really like Oliver, and a friend just had a boy and named him True, which I think is super cute.

  20. Yay, pink leg warmers! You are going to have so much fun with ballet!

And that is so exciting you will be an Aunt x 2! Hurray! I like the name Deckard and 'O' names for boys like Oliver, Otis, and Orrin. One of my friends who is a lawyer is currently trying to convince his girlfriend that Liberty (for a girl) and Justice (for a boy) would be fantastic names for their future children. Justice Wanger has a nice ringer to it, but I'm not sure how that will fly on the playground!

    Have a wonderful weekend, Shoko!

  21. Since Margaux and Max are both "Ma" names, it might be fun to start with "ma", but maybe a third "a" sound to keep it slightly different and not overly cheesy. My top pick would be Matthias - and I'm partial to the mah-tee-ahs pronunciation over mah-thie-ahs. I also like Major.

  22. Ballet class! SO cool...something I've been wanting to try for awhile now is a barre class. I hear it kicks your ass, but it sounds so classy.

  23. Wow! Thank you, everyone, for all these amazing ideas! I love them all, and I know Max and Margaux appreciate the help SO much. Really can't thank you enough. I'll keep you posted on what they choose!

Elle, the workshop's at Mark Morris!

Monica, omigoodness, congratulations!!! That's such wonderful news - so, so happy for you!

Unknown, that's perfect! Theo for short :)

Alex, haha, yes! I'm biased. But even if he weren't my brother, I'd still be his biggest fan.

Rachel, I've actually been to a barre class - it's intense! I could barely keep up - I guess that doesn't bode well for my workshop...

  24. Dance lessons sound so much fun. Enjoy!
I know a boy named Darwin- big shoes to fill!

  25. Boy names? Here are some that I love...

Maddox ( hey this would be PERFECT. Then all their names would start with M and end with X. And I really love the name too. Its great for a kid and slightly sexy for a man ;D )

Vesper (actually I love this for a boy OR a girl)

  30. BALLET! AMAZING!

i'm joining the CONGRATULATIONS train on your second time around at being an aunt! and while this is in no way going to top the THELONIUS MCAWESOME suggestion, I've always dug "Jack" and "Charlie" as boy's names :)

  31. Theo, Matteo, Elias (Eli), Luke/Luca, Nico, Oliver (Ollie), Emile, Gray...those are just a few faves, not including our tippity top (keeping that one secret if we end up having one of our own!).

You're going to be the best auntie!

  33. Ballet! That sounds so fun. I've toyed with the idea of taking a class, so I would love to hear how it goes.

I am useless with baby names, but I am loving everyone's suggestions! Congrats on being an aunt!

  34. Shoko, that's such exciting news! Congratulations on becoming an auntie for the second time! Here are some names I'm fond of: Elijah (but pronounced as EliYa), Joshua, Noah (I guess I'm into names that end on an a - haha :)) And how cool is it that you're taking a ballet class - did you take classes as a kid? I've always wanted to! Can't wait to hear how you like it!

  35. You guys are the sweetest!

Lisa, I took ballet when I was very young (probably four or five) but never again since then! I can't wait!

  36. Shoko. I had no idea your brother is Max! When shopping for wedding photographers I came across his work but we ended up doing our wedding in NYC. What a small internet world. also, I saw that you want to eat more outer borough? A friend of mine is a sometime food tour guide in Queens (http://www.vayable.com/experiences/407-queens-tastes-of-the-world) and he knows all the good spots out there and is friends with all the vendors. I think he could help you in your search for the perfect dumpling.

  37. Michelle, that's awesome! Thank you so much for the rec! I would love to find the perfect dumpling - your friend just might be the guide I need!

  38. This is late, but I wanted to chime in!

My favorite boy's names are Ben and Sam (technically, I guess they would be Benjamin and Samuel). Love the quiet strength in both.

  39. Hi shoko, I've been thinking to take a ballet class for a long time. Please let us know how it goes! Congratulations on becoming an aunt again! How about a name sounds japanese too, like Ken? p.s. I'm a huge fan of Max's work (I included his work in my wishlist a while ago)! I didn't know he's your brother till recently. What a talented brother and sister! xo akiko
