I love the story Meg Ray - founder of the San Francisco bakery, Miette - tells in this video, about the beginning of her love affair with baking. A child with poor eyesight, the spark was lit the day she got glasses. "The first thing I ever really saw clearly was this pastry case. It has resonated in who I am for the rest of my life."
Speaking of dessert, I'll be resuming my Sweet Thing series next week. Can't wait to get started again!
I (happily) blame Blogshop - Bri Emery and Angela Kohler's Photoshop class for bloggers - which came to New York this past weekend, and which I was fortunate enough to attend. I can't believe how much I learned in just two short days.
Like how to do this:
I should also mention that the food was spectacular, the space was gorgeous, and Bri and Angela are perfect teachers. I loved every minute, and I'm so happy they brought the class to New York.
European readers, did you know Blogshop is going international this fall? Spots are still available in Berlin (October 15-16) and Paris (October 22-23). There will be workshops in Boston and New York in December, as well. If you're a blogger who's new to Photoshop, (as I am), I couldn't recommend it highly enough!
Many of my happiest memories involve travel: riding the train in India; a delirious, 17-hour road-trip from Croatia to Bosnia; milking goats in New Zealand; visiting Vermont last fall with my parents. (Below, two pictures from that trip, including a shot of me playing beekeeper on a friend's farm.)
Here, in a video by filmmaker Galvea Kelly, fifty Chicagoans share favorites of their own.
I was recently lent a copy of the 1968 Godard documentary, "Sympathy for the Devil," which fascinated, startled, and confused me all at once. (You'll have to see it to know what I mean; you can find the trailer here.)
I've always loved the Rolling Stones. (My dad still remembers with horror the night I came home from a Stones concert and announced that I wanted to marry Keith Richards. I was eleven years old.) These days, though my tastes are tamer, I remain a devoted fan.
To celebrate the fact that it's almost Friday, (and also in honor of Fashion's Night Out), here's a video of the band, performing "Jumpin' Jack Flash" in 1968's Rock and Roll Circus.
Last week, I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon showing my (LA-based) friend, Lou, around Brooklyn. Aside from being wonderful company, Lou also happens to be a very talented photographer. Below, some images from his tumblr, a short drink of water.
My dessert-loving heart skipped a beat when I spotted this pink champagne cake (covered in edible glitter!) on Pinterest yesterday. Inspired by a pair of Miu Miu ankle boots, blogger and baker extraordinaire, Apollina, created the confection in honor of her 30th birthday.
